SOLAR PANELS
On-Grid connected
PV solar panels (Photovoltaic) or micro generators very simply put
generate electricity, produced from daylight through a process called
photovoltaic's (PV). "Photo" refers to light and "voltaic"
to electricity. Photons creating Electrons.
"PV solar
panels installed in Japan in the 1960's are still going strong today"
On Grid PV Solar Panels
Generally considered the 'Mercedes' of the solar world, you can
generate your own domestic electric for the next 30 years as, green
issues change the world we know, while adding value and status to
your property.
Photovoltaic solar panels (PV Systems) can be used for homes, offices,
public buildings. As part of a grid connection PV systems can produce
electricity which is sold to the National Grid, combined with basic
energy saving measures.
The innovative PV array technology and mounting systems means that
PV can be retrofitted on existing roofs or easily incorporated as
part of the building envelope at construction stage. The benefits
are:
- Your own
clean, independent renewable power source
- Can reduce
your electricity bills by up to 100% (Depending on your energy
consumption rate and size of system purchased)
- Surplus sold
back to the National Grid at good rates
- Gain valuable
tradable 'Renewable obligation certificates' (ROCs)
- Increases
the value of your property
- Low maintenance,
with a long functional lifetime of 30+ years plus Silent in operation
- It is the
only renewable energy source that is proven
- No "Nimby"
or planning barriers
- Contribute
to reducing the impact of global warming and climate change.
Frequently Asked
Questions
Can I use it
to heat my House?
PV solar systems and solar hot water are commonly confused, which
is perhaps understandable given that both can be described as 'solar
power' and roof mounted panels. However, the two technologies actually
bear little resemblance apart from they both harness the suns energy
directly.
How much will PV generate?
A PV System would generate approximately 750 kWh/year per kWp installed.
So our basic 2 kWp system would generate around 1500 kWh per year,
and a 5kWp system will produce around 4500 kWh.
Will it supply all my electricity?
The average household consumption is 3000 kWh per year. Thus on
average our smallest 1kW system would supply nearly 50% of your
electricity over the course of the year. Though it may be possible
to do more by carefully controlling your energy use.
What grants are available?
There are government grants schemes to assist with this type of
solar. The DTI are offering a maximum of £3,000 per kW installed.
What does 'grid connected' mean?
The generated electricity, which will obviously vary according to
the level of sunlight, will not match the pattern of electricity
demand. This is resolved by connecting the PV system in parallel
with the distribution network (the grid).
In this way the deficit between generation and demand can simply
be purchased from your electricity supplier as normal. The reliability
of your system will not be affected. Conversely, should generation
exceed demand, then the surplus can be exported to the grid and
sell this electricity back to your supplier.

Is my home suitable?
This is dependent on the size of your roof. The panels can be configured
in many different ways to fit, but the illustration (above) shows
you the sizes for each 1kW needed, or approximately 8m sq of roof
space for each 1kW installed. If roof space is an issue, another
option, is to ground mount them on a frame within your garden.
Do I need planning permission?
Eco Build Property can not vouch for the decisions made by your
local planning authority, and we recommend that you contact them
at the offset. However unless you live in a listed building or conservation
area, in our experience planning is generally granted or not required
for PV solar, and arrays mounted less than 10cm above the roof ridge
line.
What maintenance is required?
One of the advantages of PV solar over other UK micro generation
technologies, is that minimal maintenance is required because it
is a solid state energy conversion process. The only requirement
is for periodic cleaning of the PV arrays, for any domestic electrical
installation.

PV Feasibility Equations
Your yearly electric bill x 30 years (typical solar panel life span)
+ 25% (latest energy increases)
+ 3% (yearly inflation)
= your future energy costs
This equation does not take into consideration any future energy
price rises, within the next 30 years, which are inevitable. Now
decide if you want to spend this money as you do now, or choose
the eco-friendly choice for your children or grandchildren
Advantages of installing a PV system
- No emissions,
No Noise
- No maintenance
(no moving parts to wear out)
- Integrated
into or mounts onto an existing building
- Visually
attractive
- Questions
when choosing a PV Solar Panels system
- How much
roof space do I need?
The system does take a lot of roof space, but (photovoltaic) pv
systems can be installed within your garden area using 'A' frames,
facing south, if roof space is a problem.
- Are they
manufactured within the UK, supporting British manufacturers,
helping us become a leading renewable energy supplier to the up
and coming worldwide industry?
Yes please support British industry.
- I heard PV
systems are expensive.
With generous DTI grants available, and the increase in your house
price after install, with relief from the up and coming energy
prices, investment in such a system, has now become a real option
millions of homes across the UK.
- Can I sell
my surplus energy?
Yes, ROC's (Renewable energy certificates) are credited to you
and tradeable. As energy prices rise, these are increasing in
value, earn everyday, and the more you save energy within your
household, the more you will earn.
- Will installation
have a large impact on my home?
Once the solar panels are installed on the roof with scaffolding,
the inside components do not take any inside space up. Installations
usually can be done within 3-4 days, with installers being considerate,
clean and tidy.
- What size
solar panel system will I need?
This depends on your energy consumption rate. You can find this
out by looking at your electricity bill. (Kwh). We can help you
work out what size pv system is required for your household.
- Do I need
planning permission?
Only if you live within a conservation area, or in a listed building.
It is worth contacting your local council beforehand.
